DIASPORA OF HOPE ART CAMP IS COMING!

29 10 2010

For the last few years, Inspiration Centre has been hosting the Diaspora of Hope art camp in conjunction with BuildaBridge — an organization that uses the arts to help people in difficult situations to heal from trauma and find hope for their future.  We concentrate on themes of peace and community building while teaching the kids various art techniques and skills. Last year, we had poetry, dancing, theatre, photography, and mural painting among the activities to participate in.

This year’s camp is just one month away! (It will start on November 29 and go until December 4). The theme this year is EQUALITY and UNITY. In the past, the camp has been held right here in Mathare. However, this year, we are planning to take about 80 kids out of the slum for a week-long art retreat. Our dream is to go all the way to Tindaret in the Rift Valley (6 hours away). We have found a location that has all of the necessary facilities to house the children and even feed them — located in a beautiful rural setting. Most of the kids here at the center have hardly left the Mathare area, let alone Nairobi. The chance to experience another part of the country and take a break from their daily burdens would be amazing for these kids!

To be able to put on such a production, we need your help. First of all, please pray for us as we plan this exciting event. We’ve never had the kids on an overnight trip before — this will definitely be a challenge for our volunteers to manage. Second, if you’re in the Nairobi area, we are still looking for tents, sleeping bags, and food for the trip. If you can assist with any of these things, please call Moses at +254725891263 or +254735333237.

Finally, we estimate that it will cost around $2000 to put this whole production on. Costs include transportation to and from the camp, art supplies, and food. Most our volunteer art teachers also come from the slums, so we hope to fund their travel as well.

You can sponsor 1 child for just $15.00
