Making Dreams come true

27 04 2016

The month of April is a significant month for most students in Kenya. Students normally get a four week break from school. This means having a lot of time on their hands and sometimes getting into trouble. Our ministry however had a different plan this year. It was time for our annual Art Camp!

Our long term partners, Bear Valley Church from Colorado, sent a team of five people led by the Bryants for a period of one week. The church also supported the entire camp financially. The students were divided into different classes; Dance class led by Max and Teresa, Culinary class led by Jenn, the Craft class led by Jon and Maddie, Painting class led by Debbie and Photography class led by Godfrey and Leylah.

Our 2016 theme was “My Body, God’s Temple.” The teachers had to use their Art form to teach the students the layout of the Old Testament Temple; from the Outer Court to the Holy of Holies as explained in 1Kings 6. It was also a time for learning about our value to God, and important physical/emotional boundaries. Our temple is special! The camp lasted five days and was hosted at Word of Life Camp in Ukunda. The students had free afternoons to enjoy swimming in the Indian Ocean. For most of our students, it was their first time to visit the Coast part of Kenya. We wanted this camp to be unforgettable to our 50 students and more than 10 teachers. Secretly, the Bryants and Inspiration Centre had conspired to have everyone fly back on theĀ  last day of the camp. This was a once in a life time experience for kids who are used to seeing poverty, pain, brokenness andĀ  hopelessness. They were given a different lease and perspective on life.

From her book “A Return to Love,” Marianne Williamson states that “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frighten us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
